Quick answer

Lifeline is a federal program run by the FCC and administered by USAC that lowers the cost of phone or internet service for eligible low-income households. It provides up to $9.25 a month, or up to $34.25 on Tribal lands, toward service from an approved provider like iPhone Government. With our plans, that benefit brings your bill to $0. You're limited to one Lifeline benefit per household.

How does Lifeline work?

  1. You apply through a Lifeline provider (us) or directly with the National Verifier.
  2. The National Verifier confirms you qualify.
  3. Your provider applies the monthly benefit to your service, and you pay $0 on our plans.

What are the Lifeline rules?

  • One per household. Not one per person.
  • Use it or lose it. Use your free service at least once every 30 days (call, text or data).
  • Recertify yearly. Confirm you still qualify. See recertification.
  • Non-transferable. You can't give your benefit to someone else, but you can move it to a new provider.

What is the National Verifier?

The National Verifier is the FCC/USAC system that checks eligibility against state and federal databases. It also keeps a national database so each household gets only one benefit.

Does Lifeline include a free phone?

Lifeline itself covers service. Free phones come from providers. iPhone Government includes a free iPhone, smartphone or tablet offer for eligible customers.

FAQ

Lifeline program questions

Is Lifeline the same as Obama phone?

'Obama phone' is a nickname. Lifeline started in 1985 under President Reagan and was expanded to wireless in 2005. It's funded by the Universal Service Fund, not tax dollars.

Who pays for Lifeline?

The Universal Service Fund, which is supported by contributions from telecom companies (often passed on as a small fee on phone bills).

Can I get Lifeline and ACP?

ACP ended in June 2024. Lifeline continues and is not affected.

Can I use Lifeline for home internet instead?

Yes. Lifeline can be applied to qualifying home broadband or mobile service, but only one per household.
